What Is Not Included? A Quality Inspector’s Rule for Choosing a NOCO GB70 and Workshop Gear

Most warranty failures start with the question, not the part

“Which jump starter should I buy?” is the call I get most often. But after four years of inspecting aftermarket parts before they go on a shelf, I’ve learned that the product is rarely the first problem. The first problem is the way we ask for it.

I’m the quality/compliance person at an automotive aftermarket distributor. In a normal year I review 200+ unique items—labels, manuals, first-article samples, packaging. Maybe closer to 180 if I don’t count repeat samples. In Q4 last year I rejected 9% of first deliveries. Most weren’t “broken.” They were mismatched to the way someone would actually use them.

The surface problem: “best” is easier than “fitness for use”

When someone asks, “What is the best soap to wash a car?” or “Should I get the 2000A unit?” I don’t think they’re looking for a lazy answer. They want the one that won’t create surprises. The problem is that “best” implies one universal standard. There isn’t one. A GB70 NOCO Boost HD 12V 2000A can be the best jump starter for one vehicle application and the wrong tool for another. A soap can be the best for gloss enhancement and terrible for removing old wax before a coating. A 40-44' electric scissor lift narrow option can be perfect on width and hopeless for a path with ramps and tight gates.

So I’ve started rephrasing the question: What is the worst condition this product will face? That changes the conversation from category to specification.

The deeper problem: product names sound like specs

A product name is a compressed story. The GB70 NOCO Boost HD 12V 2000A tells me it’s a 12V heavy-duty boost pack rated at 2000 peak amps. That’s useful. But it doesn’t tell me whether it’s for a battery that’s merely weak or one that’s been dead for a month. It doesn’t tell me what the clamps can handle, how the lithium pack protects itself at low temperatures, or what kind of batteries are compatible. Those details live in the full specification and manual—not in the model.

I’ve seen units come back to us labeled “defective” when the actual issue was application. Someone used a product near its edge, not because the product was bad, but because they didn’t know where the edge was. A quality manufacturer publishes edges. That’s a good sign, not a weakness.

Searching “NOCO trickle charger” isn’t enough

Take the phrase “NOCO trickle charger.” People search that phrase all the time. But the NOCO lineup includes maintainers, smart chargers, and charger/maintainer hybrids at different amperages. A 1A maintainer is designed for long-term storage. If a battery voltage has dropped very low, a low-amp maintainer can take days to recover it. The phrase “trickle charger” doesn’t tell me which job you’re doing. I now ask: is the goal to hold a battery during winter storage, or to bring a dead battery back? Those are two different specs, and both can be NOCO products.

Narrow lifts and socket sets

The same logic applies to shop equipment. A 40-44' electric scissor lift narrow version can fit a 56-inch aisle and still stop the job because the stowed height doesn’t clear the dock door, or because the site’s lift capacity drops on a sloped path. “Narrow” is one dimension. The quote may say good things about width, but if it doesn’t list all the dimensions and operating requirements, the surprise is still coming.

And a socket impact set is one of the easiest examples to explain. A chrome socket may fit the same hex bolt as an impact socket, but under an impact wrench it can crack. I’ve held two socket sets that looked identical until I turned them over: one had impact markings, the other didn’t. The unmarked one was fine for a hand tool set. It was not fine for the air gun. The exact phrase on the label matters.

What is the best soap to wash a car? The answer is a spec, not a slogan

I often hear “What is the best soap to wash a car?” The professional version of the question is “What is this soap’s pH, dilution ratio, and effect on my protection layer?” A high-foam soap that smells nice can strip wax or leave film. A pH-neutral soap with proper lubricity might be the safer choice for a painted surface. If a chemical supplier won’t list that information, the product is not transparent enough for our shop. The same is true for a lift, a socket, or a jump starter.

What it costs when you skip the specification

The cost isn’t always broken parts. Sometimes it’s a supplier delivery fee on a 40-44' electric scissor lift that was narrow but not “fits through the access door” narrow. Sometimes it’s a $350 invoice for a battery that was drained further by a maintainer too small for the job. Sometimes it’s a technician reaching for a socket that isn’t impact-rated and hoping nothing flies.

In my first year, I made the classic specification mistake: I approved an order for a socket impact set without seeing a sample because the seller said it was “the same thing, just a different supplier.” It cost us a restocking fee and a week of delay. At that time, we didn’t have a formal first-article verification process. The third time a similar problem happened, I created one.

Most products won’t fail in the first week. The failure happens in the third week, the third job, or the first truly cold morning. That delayed cost is why an incomplete specification can make even a cheap product expensive.

What I do now

The answer isn’t to buy only the most expensive brand. It’s to require that the product, seller, or spec sheet tells me what is not included. The vendor who lists real limits and real fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

  • Ask what is NOT included. Not just freight and setup costs. What operating temperatures, battery chemistries, impact ratings, ramp angles, or clear-coat safe claims are excluded? The more specific the exclusions, the fewer surprises.
  • Define the failure condition before choosing the product. A GB70 NOCO Boost HD 12V 2000A answers a certain kind of problem. It isn’t the same as a charger for bringing a deeply discharged battery back over days. Know the difference before you order.
  • Verify with your own eyes. Look for markings, manuals, and published specs. If the part doesn’t say “impact rated,” don’t assume. If the lift doesn’t list total dimensions, don’t assume. If the soap doesn’t list pH or dilution, don’t assume.
  • Treat “best” as marketing until it becomes data. The best soap for one vehicle may be a bad choice for another. The best charger spec depends on battery type and how long you plan to leave it connected. The best socket for a breaker bar may be dangerous on an impact gun.

The product that can show its limits is easier to recommend than the product that claims to be universally best. Transparent specs are not a marketing weakness. They’re a trust signal. And in a workshop, trust is what prevents the expensive surprise.
