The 7-Step Workshop Checklist: NOCO GENIUS5, GBX55, 9-Inch WiFi Stereo, Harley ABS Scan Tool, and Polish vs Wax

This checklist is for shop owners, mobile mechanics, and anyone who keeps a fleet of vans from rolling out on time. It's not a sales pitch for every NOCO product in the catalog. It's the list I use when I train a new tech, buy a new service truck, or explain to a customer why their car took an extra half day.

I handle tool and equipment orders for a small mobile vehicle service business. The first time I installed one, I didn't check the dash depth before ordering the mounting kit. The screen looked fine on the bench. Then it touched the HVAC duct behind the dashboard, so the whole kit sat too far forward. I should have measured twice and ordered the correct adapter. That mistake cost me about $120 and a Saturday.

Also, ISO 10487 standardizes the stereo's main connector, but standard doesn't mean every car uses the same pin positions. You often need a CAN-bus adapter to keep steering wheel controls and factory amp features working. And if your customer wants a backup camera, test the trigger wire with the vehicle in reverse before you install the trim. I learned that after removing the same trim panel three times in one afternoon.

4. If you work on bikes, budget for a Harley ABS scan tool

When I started working on motorcycles, I thought a generic OBD-II scanner would cover everything. It didn't. A Harley-Davidson ABS scan tool is not an optional gadget if you ever agree to chase an ABS light on a Harley. Some models use the standardized J1962 connector, but the ABS module often needs software that generic scanners do not provide. The connector is standardized; the data is not.

SAE J1962 standardizes the OBD-II connector. It does not standardize what every module will say through it.

The lesson cost me $140. I replaced a wheel speed sensor on a 2013 touring bike based on a guess, and the ABS light was still on. The sensor wasn't bad. If I had done a proper scan first, I would've seen the real code and avoided the part. That was not the shop's fault; it was mine for skipping the proper scan tool.

5. Settle the polish vs waxing car question before you pick up a pad

This sounds too simple for a workshop checklist, but the wording has cost me more than a few explaining sessions. Polish is abrasive. It removes oxidation, light scratches, and swirl marks. Wax is protective. It sits on top of the paint and keeps the polished surface from getting attacked by weather and dirt.

Saying we'll polish the car to a customer often sounds like we'll protect the car. When I first added detailing as a side service, I made exactly that mistake. The car looked great on delivery, but six weeks later the customer saw swirls and assumed I hadn't done anything. I had polished without applying a wax layer, so there was nothing protecting the finish. Now I write polish and wax or sealant as separate lines on the invoice, and I do a quick spot test on every paint panel before starting.

It's not complicated, but it is a distinction you cannot skip. Polish without wax is an exposed result. Wax without polish is just a glaze over the problems.

6. Test everything in the condition it will be used

This is the step everyone wants to rush. I include it last because it's the one that has caught the most problems.

  • Battery: After charging or jumping, let the vehicle sit for 30 minutes and re-check voltage. A 12V battery that stabilizes below 12.4V needs more attention than a jump can give it.
  • Stereo: With the 9-inch WiFi unit, test the backup camera in reverse, play audio through both front and rear channels, and recheck the dash trim for clearance before saying done.
  • ABS: Clear the codes from the Harley scan tool and do a short road test. If the ABS light comes back, the code is the truth, not the suspect part.
  • Paint: Inspect the test panel under direct sunlight and with a paint thickness gauge if you have one. Then, and only then, proceed.

I've caught 47 potential errors using this exact checklist in the past 18 months. I didn't include that number to brag. It's just proof that a boring checklist outperforms my memory every single time.

7. Write the lesson down immediately

Every mistake I described here is in my work notebook. Date, vehicle or tool, mistake, fix, and the checklist change. That notebook has saved us a ton of money. Should mention: it only works if you actually read it before starting the next job. I didn't read it once, and I repeated an ABS mistake two months later. Not going to claim I'm perfect.

If you don't have a system for this, start with one page in a binder. Add one line after every problem. In a year, you'll have a tool that no sales brochure can give you.

A few notes before you run off to buy gear

On pricing: This was accurate as of April 2026, but product specs and prices change fast. Verify current NOCO models, car stereo chassis sizes, and scan tool coverage before spending money.

On best gear: I'm not sure why so many buyers obsess over peak amperage numbers and ignore cable gauge and clamp quality. My best guess is that peak amps are easier to compare than build quality. If you look at the actual copper wires and the chance of a clamp slipping, you'll catch more problems before they happen.

On staying safe: Do not assume any battery charger, jump starter, or scan tool is safe for every vehicle. Read the manual, check polarity, and when in doubt, test on a known-good vehicle first.
