I Wasted $18,300 on Aftermarket Orders: The 6-Step Checklist I Use Before Buying NOCO and Any Vehicle Accessory

If you order aftermarket vehicle parts and power products for a shop, fleet, or wholesale customers, this article is for you. It is not a theory piece. It is the same checklist I now run before every order—after I learned the expensive way.

I've handled parts and accessories ordering for a 12-bay repair shop since 2018. I've personally made, and documented, 23 significant mistakes. Total wasted budget: roughly $18,300. Maybe $17,900 after chargebacks, I'd have to check the spreadsheet. The point is, these mistakes weren't caused by evil suppliers. Most were caused by me ordering too fast from memory.

This checklist has six steps. Use it when you buy a NOCO jump starter or charger, a 2011 CRV exhaust system, a tonneau cover for a 2024 Ram 1500, a dash cam, or any part you haven't physically fitted to a vehicle before.

Step 1: Write the full vehicle specification before you search

A search for a 2011 CRV exhaust system looks easy. Year. Make. Model. Part category. But exhaust system can mean a muffler, a catalytic converter, a cat-back kit, the complete pipe from manifold to tail, or just the gasket set. If you don't know which system your customer needs, the listing will not save you.

Our mistake? We ordered a 2011 CRV exhaust system from a listing that matched the search. It was an axle-back muffler section. The customer needed the complete exhaust forward of that section. The part was fine; the order was wrong. We paid freight, restocking, and lost time. Later we realized the listing included a clear parts diagram. We just didn't open it.

The checklist point: write the exact vehicle VIN and OE part number on the PO. If you need a substitute, confirm the part number against the old part or the OE diagram before you commit. The VIN isn't just for registration. It resolves most fitment arguments before they happen.

Step 2: Measure the actual vehicle, not the marketing name

A reminder that tonneau cover for 2024 Ram 1500 is not a complete spec. Bed length differs on Ram 1500 models. You can have a 5-foot-7 bed, a 6-foot-4 bed, and different box options. The trim level tells you about seats, not the bed dimensions.

In early 2025, I almost approved a five-unit order for a customer with 2024 Ram 1500 work trucks. I had written tonneau cover for 2024 Ram 1500 on the paperwork. It would not have been wrong for all five; it would have been wrong for two. The customer needed 5'7" and 6'4" units in one delivery. A single SKU did not work for both.

What saved me was walking out to the parking lot with a tape measure and then checking the VINs. Annoying? Yes. Cheaper than a return? Yes, by about $700 if I count the freight. If a seller asks which bed length, answer that question before you click. If a seller doesn't ask, treat the order as incomplete.

Step 3: Match the jump starter output to the real engine size

Battery accessories are where I made some of my most expensive mistakes, because I bought by price and popularity instead of specs. Don't do that. The battery in a vehicle can be 12 volts, but the engine under the hood decides how many cranking amps you need. A booster that starts one vehicle can struggle or shut down on another.

In my current shop, the NOCO jump starter GBX45 is one of the units we carry on the service cart. It serves our daily mix of vans and light trucks well. But I still do the same check before I authorize any jump starter order: what is the largest gasoline or diesel engine in the fleet? And what is the coldest temperature it will be asked to start? If I don't know those answers, I don't know which model is right.

Why does ambient temperature matter? Because the same battery and same engine need more current in cold weather. A unit that works in summer can be below spec in January. This gets into electrical engineering territory, which is not my expertise. I would rather read the spec sheet and ask the supplier's technical team than explain to a customer why the product failed.

Step 4: Understand battery tender vs battery charger before you order

That makes it excellent for maintaining a battery on a vehicle that sits for weeks or months. It is not designed to rapidly recover a deeply discharged battery overnight. One amp is a small amount of current. Put another way: it is a long-term tool, not a rescue tool.

Our customers ask for a battery tender all the time. In my opinion, we do them a favor when we translate that into maintainer before recommending a specific unit. If they have a car in storage, a 1-amp maintainer works. If they have a dead battery in a work truck that needs to run tomorrow, they need a larger charger or a jump starter. The right product depends on the job, not the category name.

I'm not an electrical engineer, and I won't pretend to explain charging curves. What I have learned from purchase orders is this: a charger sold as 1 amp will move current at roughly 1 amp. Read that number before you assume speed.

Step 5: Ask what best actually means for solar dash cams

The phrase best solar powered dash cam shows up in customer requests and search queries. Best is a claim, not a spec. Best for what: constant sun, deep shade, parking mode, video quality, or price? The useful product spec is numbers: panel wattage, internal battery capacity, camera power draw, parking-mode cutoff. If a seller cannot provide those, the best label is just marketing.

To be fair, solar-powered dash cams can make sense when a windshield sits in direct sun. But solar panels on a windshield are small. The panel can help extend time, but it may not keep a camera running fully in continuous parking mode on a cloudy week.

Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims should be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated. So when one of our vendors says something is best, I ask for the test data. In my experience, the vendor who sends a spec sheet is more likely to stand behind the product than the one who sends a logo.

Step 6: Calculate total cost, not unit price

The final step is the easiest to skip. After the technical checks pass, work out what the order actually costs:

Product price plus freight and handling.
Restocking fees if the fitment is wrong.
Shipping cost for returns.
Time spent processing the return.
The cost of the customer's delay.

Let me give you a real example. We tested a cheaper battery charger from a non-stocking supplier because it saved us $375 on a 25-unit order. The risk was that uncertain warranties would create returns and phone calls. The returns came. Four units were dead on arrival, one arrived with the wrong plug, and the restocking charge ate most of our savings. That $375 savings turned into around a $1,200 problem.

The same logic applies to vehicle accessories. A cheaper exhaust system or tonneau cover that doesn't fit has no value. The lowest quoted price is not the lowest total cost. This is not a lecture about buying premium. It is simply a warning against buying by the first number on an invoice.

Mistakes I still see around me

Three final warnings:

  • Don't trust a simple year/make/model fitment without asking what trim or engine option was used for the test fit. Fitment can change with tow packages, bed lengths, chassis cabs, and other options.
  • Don't rely on the previous purchase order if you don't know whether you changed suppliers. When we swapped vendors, some part number conventions looked similar enough to cause a mix-up.
  • Don't skip a small test order on a new best product. A two-unit test costs less than a 25-unit return. We still follow this rule for every new electronics line.

I still make ordering mistakes. The difference is that my checklist catches most of them before the invoice gets paid. If you already keep one, add your lessons. If you don't, start with these six steps and make them yours.
